I posted this on Facebook but since most of you will never be there I’ll offer it here.
Something a friend did just reminded me that I should remind others.
I never “copy and paste” any message at any time onto my page. I consider it all clickbait and view scavenging.
I never reply to all of the nostalgia post that want me to reveal something that would reveal my age and interest. Advertisers that are data phishing. Another fine example of how you are the product in social media. Our information is used to generate revenue. We are sold on the block.
I could go on. What I should really do is go off… of social media.
If I were a groupie sort of guy I would use WhatsApp (encrypted data) groups or group texting or group email. (Not Facebook groups. More support for Facebook data mining). I have a good friend who does WhatsApp groups, several I think. People all over the world do it. Of course some of those private groups are getting up to some very nasty things. I group text with my two sisters. Is that social media?
(I use Pulse messaging for some extra features and texting.)
There are also some good “productivity” apps or software that allow for collaboration of teams. Google has workspaces for example. I don’t use Evernote anymore but they facilitate that. I imagine those could be leveraged to create a social space for your closest 150 friends. Maybe there are limits to the size of your group or team. That means they would just charge a little extra money for more participation.
Need we mention video rooms… Zoomers and Skypers and many I know nothing of.
(I met my last wife in an ancient Yahoo chat room in 1999. I was in Tennessee and she was in London, England)
I use #obsidian database software, which has a publish feature for a monthly subscription. It would mean putting a select group of files, or all my research / data files online if I wanted to. They have individual “vaults” that can be published that could be restricted to just certain topics. Another way to have a website. The owner of the upload can allow others to alter files. At least I think that’s the way it works. I imagine the database could be set up for socializing on whatever folks wanted. Or for actually doing some work together 😊.
There are any number of folks who are setting up home servers which is not difficult to do and not particularly expensive. Anybody with a mind for it could set up their own private or public social network. It’s done all the time. We just don’t know about it because we weren’t invited. (Please tell me if you’re part of something like that and how is it going?)
No doubt there’s a mountain of collaboration in scientific circles in the same way. I wonder what the philosophers and theologians get up to with technology? Socially or otherwise. I mean, that’s how we got this big web in the first place, scientific people doing scientific things, together.
Anyway I’m just talking off my head here. Thoughts like these keep gestating In the petri dish of my social media dissatisfactions.
I could turn my fountain pen hobby into something productive: writing letters and sending them by snail mail. That would be a true innovation.
All of this is voice-dictated on my Samsung Galaxy s22 Ultra. Hmmm…. Sometimes I wonder who I am.
